Royalton Township Planning Commission Meeting

August 18, 2015

Present: Duane Swanson, Roberta Folkestad, Gary Valvoda, Nancy Dahlin-Teich

Absent:   Les Orvis

 

7 p.m. Meeting called to order by Gary Valvoda, Planning Commission member.  

 

Motion by Duane Swanson to approve the agenda as presented, seconded by Teich, motion carried unanimously.

 

Motion by Duane Swanson to approve the minutes of the July 28, 2015 Planning Commission meeting as read, with correction of Teich, to Valvoda,   seconded by Roberta Folkestad, motion carried unanimously.

 

Motion by Roberta Folkestad to approve the minutes of the August 17, 2015 working Planning Commission meeting, Gary Valvoda seconded, motion carried unanimously.

 

Old business:

 

Signage at end of Canary and Harvest roads

Commission requested an update from John Kemen, Zoning Administrator on this topic.   Kemen offered the following information based on his recent visit to the site.   Winery update,   operations looked good.   The on premises signage looked good.  There are two off premises signs that were not approved in the application for signage.  The owner of the business was present.  The owner states that all three spots were brought up at the time of the conditional use permit application.   The owner believes that the signage sign agreed upon was 3x4.  Owner sites page 75 of ordinance for signage. Business owner believes that all three signs were approved. 

Roberta Folkestad read the motion approved at the township board level.   Commission member Valvoda clarified that the off premises signage is what is in question.  

 

Community members present offered that it is important to support local businesses.  There was also a question why township gets to have a sign out on highway 70.  There is a lease agreement approved with the landowner in the case of the township signage.  Community members asked how the business would be able to have three signs.   The original application did not request three signs for this business. 

 

Duane Swanson motioned that at the annual review of the business, all findings were satisfactory as to the business operations and points on the conditional use permit issued.   Furthermore the only issue was the presence of off premises signage, being two.  These are the findings of the annual review of the conditional use permit. Gary Valvoda seconded, all motioned aye.

Working Planning Commission meeting was set at September 21, 2015 at 6:30 p.m.
